Rod Winning, Senior Consultant

Winning-Rod

Rod has been a consultant and talent development specialist since 1994. His consulting skills build on his extensive experience in industry – from factory floor to managing director over a twelve-year period – and the media, working in a range of technical video production roles.

As a senior manager, Rod developed all aspects of the company, growing the business to be a national leader in its field and winner of international excellence awards. This experience provided him with hands-on knowledge of process improvement methodologies, financial management, marketing and sales and human capital management.

Over his working life Rod has developed his passion for developing the talents of others, whether his line staff or consulting clients. He has an innate ability to understand the underlying causes of presenting issues and can work with individuals or groups to surface and resolve often long-standing dysfunctions. This passion has taken him into the fields of coaching, training, process improvement and facilitation, and to further study to enhance his abilities.

Talent and Management Development
Rod has been involved in this specialist area for more than ten years. During this time, he designed and ran the Honda Management Learning Program (HMLP), as part of his seven years with Honda Motorcycles & Power Equipment Australia.

This program’s main target was middle managers targeted to move into senior management and junior and new employees with potential to rise through all levels - the management pipeline. The program included linking performance appraisal processes with learning and development opportunities, as well as developing and presenting bespoke training programs on topics from planning and budgeting to improving team cohesion.

Coaching
Rod has been an informal coach as part of talent development programs and line management roles for most of his career. He has recently taken his skills to a new level with his study of Neuroleadership and is now a certified ‘Brain Based Coach', incorporating learning arising from lead edge Neuroscience studies. By integrating the emerging understanding of how the brain functions into his practices, Rod is able to enhance the effectiveness of his coaching and training, ensuring understanding of personal issues in a pragmatic level while working to maintain behavioural changes to integrate the changed approaches.

Executive coaching was also a large part of the HMLP. This coaching was delivered to general managers and down the structure to emerging managers. It remains one of Rod’s passions.

Media Production
Rod worked in a television production house for a number of years and has since produced many commercial and industrial videos. A number of these are currently being sold around the world.

Rod is now taking his media and marketing skills into a new field by producing computer-based training for line users.

Rod has a rather special blend of media savvy, and hard-earned business acumen. This unique blend makes for very high quality organisational media products.

Training
Rod is a trainer and facilitator with more than twenty years’ experience. His style has been described as motivational, informative and practical. In order to heighten learning transfer, Rod has studied accelerated learning techniques and behavioural neuroscience. The result is training that is fun, engaging and memorable, with a high degree of learning transfer into the workplace.

He has written and delivered many training programs, from blue collar through to senior executive. His passions include creating more effective teams, self-learning teams and improved communication and the skills and processes that support these.

Rod has consulted to many local government authorities, the welfare sector, state and federal government organisations. He has completed many projects within the private sector (mainly manufacturing, financial management and media).

Rod has also produced a number of training videos and DVD / CDROMS in the areas of team and process improvement and communication skills.

Operational Planning
As a former line and senior manager and video producer, Rod brings a user’s insight to the use of operational planning tools. This is demonstrated by a very practical approach – Rod has developed his own methodologies for simple and easily implemented operational planning that works. Rod’s approach is especially effective where the plan is controversial or buy-in seems hard to achieve.

Total Quality Management
Rod has been a fan of the logic and effectiveness of TQM since being introduced to it as a line manager over 25 years ago. He has adapted and incorporated a number of the tools from TQM and Continuous Improvement processes into his operational planning methodologies, focusing on simplifying work, reducing waste and ensuring teams have the communication and process improvement skills to work together to identify and solve workplace issues.
